BMW Group Starts In-house Fuel Cell Production for BMW iX5 Hydrogen

The BMW Group will now be manufacturing highly efficient fuel cell systems at its in-house competence centre for hydrogen. This technology is one of the core elements in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and generates a high continuous output of 125 kW/170 hp. It teams up with an electric motor featuring fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology and a high-performance battery purpose developed for this vehicle to enable its powertrain to deliver 275 kW/374 hp.

The missions demonstrated the remarkable autonomous launch of a micro-AUV from Solus-LR while submerged and underway. Following the launch, the micro-AUV surfaced and transmitted a status message to Solus-LR's command and control center via Iridium satellite. The operation was the first of its kind and demonstrated near real-time, over-the-horizon communications from a submerged AUV.

High-capacity Li-metal Battery with Improved Performance and Stability

While the current Li-ion batteries generate energy by taking Li-ions in and out of the graphite anode based on the intercalation mechanism, the Li-metal battery does not rely on this bulky and heavy graphite but uses metallic Li itself as the anode. As the Li-metal shows 10 times higher theoretical capacity (3,860 mAh/g) than graphite (372 mAh/g), it has steadily gained much attention from areas that need high-capacity batteries, such as electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Whilst battery electric trucks are already capable of delivering many urban and regional duty cycles, the energy density of current Li-ion battery technologies means that long-haul applications (> 400km), which require significant daily mileage, are very difficult to deliver with a BEV truck, due to the weight, volume, and cost of required batteries. Fuel cell electric trucks which use hydrogen, stored at high pressure (commonly 350 bar) in tanks on the vehicle, as a source of fuel to generate electricity offer an alternative zero-emission solution which can deliver long-haul range.
