Digitalisation is making giant leaps forward in the medical field. It is changing the way many people behave, who increasingly use small digital appliances such as wearables to help them in their everyday lives, which provide an overview of their health situation. The dominant trend in the development of new medical appliances is not just digitalisation, but also miniaturisation. Supplying energy to tiny format high-tech appliances requires the right kind of battery. The VARTA Microbattery CoinPower range offers the highest energy density on the Lithium-Ion cell market. It is up to 30 per cent higher than comparable batteries on the market. The new CP1240 goes even further, and achieves the highest capacity among the 4-millimetre flat cells. The compact power packet has a diameter of 12.1 millimetres and a capacity of 43 milliampere hours (mAh). The energy density of the CP1240 is 346 Watt hours per litre.
The VARTA Microbattery CoinPower range is already used in numerous medical appliances and wearables. Since batteries determine the performance and duration of use of an application, rechargeable coin cells must meet the increasing standards: a high safety factor and reliable energy supply are needed, which VARTA perfectly provides with a wide range of safety features.
One example of the constantly growing range of applications is Smart Baby Monitoring. A "smart band" on the baby's foot transmits its heart rhythm, skin temperature and movements to the parents' mobile phone, allowing them to check how their baby is doing at all times. Other medical applications include insulin pumps, portable injectors and glucose monitoring systems. Modern and intelligent safety systems ensure that senior citizens can continue to live independently. These devices reliably draw their energy from the different cells of the VARTA Microbattery CoinPower series. The same applies to wearables such as smart watches and fitness trackers, which measure blood pressure and heart rate during exercise. While we listen to music with them, earbuds collect health data such as the heart rate or temperature (ear thermometer feature) and synchronise it with the smartphone or transmit it to a doctor.
