A new design strategy has emerged for making batteries flexible.

Not only will the use of RFID in China become a $4.3 billion market in 2025, but that figure will almost double if we include the value of tags and readers made in the country and exported elsewhere.

Investment up; more products launched and larger companies driving growth.

After years of slow progress from small companies, flexible batteries now have the attention of big brands such as Apple, Samsung, LG Chemical, Nokia and STMicroelectronics, who are set to drive the flexible battery market from US$ 6.9 million in 2015 to over US$ 400 million in 2025 according to IDTechEx Research.

About $160 million has been invested in graphene companies, excluding government and IPO financing. Companies continue to move up the value chain, from selling graphene to selling graphene based intermediary products such as inks - a welcome development from end users as it lifts their burden of fine tuning and experimentation.

Many people tell us that the Internet of Things (IoT) is much more than the narrow definition of systems based on IP addressed microcontrollers with sensors.

In the research carried out for the new IDTechEx report, "The Internet of Things: Business Opportunities 2015-2025", we define IoT as based on IP addressed sensor nodes.

RFID was invented seven decades ago, however, 23% of all the RFID tags ever sold were sold in 2013. In 2014, a further 1.12 billion RFID tags will be sold versus the total number of tags sold in 2013.

More than five years later than the industry had expected, market research and events firm IDTechEx find that the passive RFID tag market is now seeing tremendous volume growth.
