There are many solar markets only accessible with technologies beyond silicon. They include transparent and flexible film solar, underwater and indoor solar. Consider lightweight photovoltaic film on the sides of buildings that cannot support heavy glass. Film retrofits on buses and boats to boost range. IDTechEx predicts $38 billion dollars business emerging by 2040 that is not affected by the commoditised silicon-in-glass "power station" business. Learn how over $10,000/W is currently paid for a record 30% efficient lll-V compound PV in a designer watch because only microwatts are needed, as an array on a satellite or wings of many high-altitude drones. Flexible copper-indium-gallium-diselenide PV has recently shot to over $2 billion sales in only ten years and now there are routes to eliminating the small amounts of toxic cadmium used. Some is of the new PV is stretchable, some self-adhesive and there are three routes to photovoltaic paint but some uses lead, some cadmium, and eliminating that is a gap in the emerging market. Tightly-rollable PV in your mobile phone, regular aircraft skin, billions of Internet of Things nodes? Yes, but better barrier films needed for some. Multipurpose PV is appearing from beautifying the sides of old buildings while powering them to unrolling as microgrid. This webinar introduces the huge materials opportunities emerging.

Solid-state batteries keep attracting tremendous attention and investment with the maturing technologies and closeness to mass production. Even with the influence of COVID-19, the potential market size is expected to grow to over $6 billion by 2030, according to the IDTechEx. With Bosch and Dyson abandoning SEEO and Sakti3, respectively in 2017, the interests and investment in solid-state technologies and companies are still hot. With various technologies available in the market, this webinar will give you an introduction to why solid-state batteries are favoured over conventional lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicle application. In addition, the following points will be addressed: Technologies in solid-state battery area; Value propositions and limitations of solid-state batteries; Regional efforts; and Market focus.

Presented by IDTechEx Chairman, Dr Peter Harrop
Available until 3rd September 2021
Supercapacitors and their variants have recently seen customer commitment to multibillion-dollar opportunities that were previously beyond their reach. Consider large peak-shaving ones for hybrid cars where the Geely orders will soon be followed by others. Add the significance of two Chinese manufacturers selling supercapacitors improved to the energy density of lithium-ion batteries eight years ago and exhibiting other parameters batteries will never reach. A $7 million follow on order has been placed for military supercapacitors.

Available until 10th September 2021
Li-ion batteries are starting to near their performance ceiling and performance improvements are proving increasingly difficult to come by. Trade-offs are having to be made to increase energy density with the use of high nickel cathodes and high capacity anodes are plagued by safety and cycle life problems. Delving into the trends being seen in patent applications can provide insight into the key areas of innovation in Li-ion batteries and the areas of development favoured by key players, helping to provide insight into how Li-ion technology can continue to improve. The growth in and subject of patent activity mirrors in many ways what is happening in the wider Li-ion industry. Certainly, competition between battery manufacturers is intensifying and emphasises the importance of battery R&D and protecting innovation.

The electricity is facing a substantial change, due to the growing amount of renewable energies installed. Because of the necessity of decarbonise the electricity grid, a growing installation of variable renewable energies is expected for the future. Due to variable nature of renewable energies, such as wind and solar, the electricity grid requires energy storage devices to store the excess of electricity produced over the day. Moreover, energy storage devices are also employed to stabilise the power grid. The webinar provides: An overview of the electricity grid, and the potential of stationary energy storage; An explanation and classification of Gravitational Energy Storage (GES) technologies; An overview of the Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) systems; An overview of Liquified Air Energy Storage (LAES) systems; and Conclusions about the analysed technologies.

The expenditure on new technologies for emerging smart cities will pass one trillion dollars yearly. That is the subject of this webinar. It shares some of the research carried out by PhD level multilingual IDTechEx analysts worldwide for their new overview report on smart city technologies with 35 forecasts. Learn how these technologies will enable smart cities to be independent in power, food and water and enjoy completely reinvented transport. Simplification will be key as we face elimination of sewerage, fuel, vehicle charging and other systems, even sidewalks and traffic accidents. Separate farming partly disappears as it vanishes into multipurpose smart buildings made of new multifunctional smart materials. For instance, vertically farm and grow meat without animals. Discover how, with rising sea levels and many cities already on large rivers or in the sea, food, electricity production and travel involving water get more important. On the other hand, new cities being planned in deserts must get clever to find and retain water. Like the report, this webinar is the antidote to smart city approaches that obsess about the information and communication technology aspect and miss the many bigger markets for new technologies emerging in smart cities.

Electricity is facing a substantial change, due to the growing amount of renewable energy sources (RES) installed to generate green electricity. Energy storage systems are becoming more important for grid and residential scale applications. In particular, battery storage systems and especially Li-ion batteries, are growing their rate of adoption. Although their purpose in residential and utility scale is quite different, these powerful devices are able to provide a multitude of services and be scaled up to provide a large amount of power and hours of storage. Although promising, the combination of renewable energies and energy storage systems are strongly affecting the well-established and proven electricity grid systems. On the other hand, a growing amount of RES will be installed in the next year to fulfill climate targets. With the fast-growing energy storage market, IDTechEx has investigated the current state of development of the main countries adopting energy storage systems. This webinar will include: An overview of the electricity grid, and the different services provided by the stationary storage devices; A comparison of Li-ion batteries and other storage systems, including but not limited to Redox Flow Battery; and An overview of the major countries adopting stationary storage system, showing the current state of development.
