Whilst data continues to support the reduced fire rate of electric vehicles (EVs) compared to combustion vehicles, even very rare occurrences present a significant risk to vehicle occupants and their surroundings. It is also unclear the impact that the average age of these vehicles could have on statistics. Fire protection materials prove crucial to preventing or delaying the propagation of thermal runaway, improving safety, and helping OEMs meet current and upcoming regulations.

There are many material solutions deployed in the market already and many more in the early stages of commercialization. Each has their own benefits and tradeoffs with critical factors like cell format, battery structure, energy density, and cost all playing important roles. Common incumbent materials include ceramic blankets, mica sheets, powder coatings, and encapsulating foams. These are likely to remain popular, but other options like aerogels, intumescent materials, and even fire resistant polymers are making ground into the market.

This webinar from will be based on IDTechEx's new report, "Fire Protection Materials for EV Batteries 2024-2034: Markets, Trends, and Forecasts". This report analyzes trends in battery design, safety regulations, and how these will impact fire protection materials.

This webinar will provide:
  • An overview of the need for fire protection materials
  • Thermal management strategies and cell-to-pack battery structure
  • Options and examples for fire protection materials in OEMs
  • The impact of sodium-ion and solid state batteries on EV safety and material needs
  • Fire protection material benchmarking
  • Market share predictions
